Aang \AAYNG\: The protagonist of the trilogy Avatar: The Last Airbender (U.S.A and Canada)/ Avatar: The Legend of Aang (Europe). Aang is a young boy of twelve years old who hailed from the Southern Air Temple before running away and encasing himself in a block of ice for 100 years until found by Katara and Sokka. Appa \OPP-uh\: A six-legged sky bison with the power to fly. He is the animal guide of Avatar Aang. See also Sky Bison.
Aunt Wu \AA-nt-WOO\: A fortuneteller from a town (unnamed) beside a volcano. See also Meng.
Avatar \AV-uh-tarr\: A single person who has the ability to control all four elements. There is only one Avatar at a time. When one dies, another is born. See also Avatar Cycle. Notable Avatars: Avatar Aang, Avatar Roku, Avatar Kyoshi, Avatar Kuruk, Avatar Yangchen.
Avatar Cycle \AV-uh-tarr SIY-kull\: The cycle in which the Avatars are born. The cycle goes Air, Water, Earth and Fire. When one Avatar dies, another is born in the next nation in the cycle.
Azulon (Fire Lord) \az-OO-lon\: Son of Fire Lord Sozin, Azulon was father of Ozai and Iroh, and is said to have been killed by Ursa in order to protect Zuko (resulting in Ursas banishment and Ozais rise to Fire Lord). Azulons granddaughter Azula was named after him.
B
Badgermoles \BAD-jerr-moles\: A hybrid between a badger and a mole, that lives in caves (most notably, the Cave of Two Lovers). Badgermoles are the original Earthbenders.
Ba Sing Se \BAH SINGG SAY\: The Earth Kingdom Capital. It is famous for its giant outer wall which was able to withstand a 300-day siege from the Dragon of the West.
Bloodbender \BLUD-benn-durr\: The power to bend blood in another being's body. The only two known Bloodbenders are Hama and Katara. See also Bloodbending
Bloodbending \BLUD-benn-ding\: A derivative of Waterbending in which a Waterbender is able to gain control of the blood in another being's body and possess them. This technique can only be used during the full moon. See also Bloodbender
Bosco \BOSS-koh\: The pet bear of the 52nd Earth King, Earth King Kuei.

Cave-Hoppers \cave-hopp-er\: A white, jumping insect found in the cool caves of the Fire Nation. First shown in The Headband.
Chin (The Great/Conqueror) \CHH-IN\: The original ruler of the town of Chin who, according to Kyoshi, was horrible and tried to take over many lands including Kyoshi Island when it was still connected to the mainland. See also Chin (Town) and Kyoshi.
Crescent Island \CRE-zent-EYE-land\: The Crescent Island was once home to Avatar Rokus shrine, until it was destroyed after the gaang visited it on the solstice. The Crescent Island is shown again as where Aang ends up at the end of The Awakening. The Crescent Island is named after its crescent shape, and is mainly one large volcano.

Dai Li \DIE-lee\: An elite team of earthbenders loyal to Long Feng (later changing loyalty over to Princess Azula) residing in Ba Sing Se (until Azula takes some with her, who appear in Day of Black Sun Part 2). It is revealed in Escape From The Spirit World that the Dai Li were trained by Avatar Kyoshi in return that the 46th Earth King did not have her help in ending the peasant revolt.
Dragonfly \DRAH-gon-fly\: A green dragon-like creature with wings, these creatures are first seen in Tales of Ba Sing Se.

Elephant Koi\ell-E-fant-k-oi\: Giant koi fish that inhabit the waters around Kyoshi Island, Aang has ridden these large creatures and they are the prey of the Unagi.

Eastern Air Temple \EEST-ern-AYER TEM-pull\: The Easternmost Air Temple, the Eastern Air Temple was home to female Air Benders.
Ember Island \EM-ber-EYE-land\: An island in the Fire Nation that the Fire Nation Royal family used to visit regularly for vacations. First seen in The Beach.

Firebender \FY-er-BENN-durr\: One who has the power to control or 'bend' the element of fire. See also Firebending, Zuko, Azula, Ozai, Iroh, Zhao.

Firebending Masters \FY-er-BENN-ding-MA-sters\: First shown in The Firebending Masters, they are two dragons named Ran and Shao and are the only dragons left alive. The knowledge of their existence is protected by the Sun Warriors.
Fire Fountain City \FY-er-FOWN-tan-SIT-ee\: Fire Fountain City is a large city in the Fire Nation named after the giant statue of Fire Lord Ozai in its centre. The gaang visits this industrial city in The Runaway and is where Sokka buys his messenger hawk Hawky.
Foggy Swamp Tribe \fog-ee-swamp-trybe\: A subsidiary of the Water Tribe, the Foggy Swamp Tribe lives in a swampy area in the Earth Kingdom made up of a large, central tree that has spread and become the entire swamp. Known members: Tho, Due, Huu.
Fong (General) \FOH-ng\: From the unnamed Earth Kingdom city where the gaang travels to in The Avatar State, General Fong believed that Aang was ready to fight Fire Lord Ozai before he had even mastered Earth or Fire, simply by using the Avatar State. He tried to force Aang into said state, and even resorted to ordering his men to attack Aang, as well as tricking Aang into thinking he had killed Katara by sinking her into the ground (which resulted in Aang going into the Avatar State).

Gaipan \GUY-pan\: Gaipan is a small village located in the central Earth Kingdom area. It was a sleepy town until it became an outpost when it was invaded by Fire Nation soldiers. The occupants of Gaipan were nearly killed when Jet and his Freedom Fighters flooded the town. Luckily Sokka evacuated them beforehand.
Gaoling \GAY-oh-LING\: Gaoling is a large town in the Earth Kingdom located within a mountain range, home to the Bei Fong family (most known being Toph) as well as Xin Fu and Master Yu.
Gyatso \gee-AHT-so\: A Monk hailing from the Southern Air Temple. He was Avatar Aang's friend and mentor as well as old friend of Avatar Roku. He was killed along with all of the other Airbenders in Firelord Sozin's first attacks.
H
Hei Bai \HAY-bye\: A spirit of the forest, Hei Bai was first seen as a frightening creature that came and destroyed an Earth Kingdom village every evening and kidnapped people. After meeting with this spirit, Avatar Aang realised that the only reason the spirit was disgruntled and angry was due to the destruction of its forest, and Aang managed to sooth it. Hei Bai returned to its true form as a gentle giant panda.
Hakoda \HA-koh-da\: Father of Sokka and Katara, Hakoda is from the Southern Water Tribe and travelled to the Earth Kingdom to fight against the Fire Nation before the show began. He is a warrior and a strategist, and many of his traits have been passed on to Sokka.
Hama \HAH-muh\: An elderly woman who was stolen from the Southern Water Tribe at a young age and was imprisoned in the Fire Nation. She pioneered the technique Bloodbending and used this power to escape prison. Afterwards, she sought a new life in the Fire Nation and spent later years victimizing innocent Fire Nation People in retribution for her misery. See also Bloodbending, Bloodbender
Haru \huh-ROO\: A young Earthbender who was met by Avatar Aang, Katara and Sokka during their travels. Katara and he worked together to free other Earthbenders from a barge prison. Later when they meet again, they have found that he has grown a moustache.
Hawky \HAW-kee\: Bought in The Runaway from Fire Fountain City, Hawky is Sokkas messenger hawk and is last seen flying away at the end of the episode with a letter for Tophs parents, written by Katara with Tophs instruction.
Herbalist \her-BA-list\: Seen only in The Blue Spirit, and a small appearance in Bato of the Water Tribe, the Herbalist tells Aang that he needs frozen frogs to cure his friends (Katara and Sokka). She owns a pet cat Miyuki. See also Aang and Miyuki.
Hing Wa Island \HING-wa-eye-land\: An island only mentioned in The Puppetmaster, it is said to be famed for its ash banana crop.
Hog Monkey \HOG-mun-key\: A hybrid between a hog and a monkey (as the name suggests), this creature was first seen in the episode Jet.

Ilah \EYE-la\: Known as Fire Lady Ilah, daughter of Avatar Roku, wife of Fire Lord Azulon and mother of Iroh and Fire Lord Ozai. Little is known about Fire Lady Ilah.
J
Jet \JET\: The leader of the Freedom Fighters. A troubled young man who travels to Ba Sing Se to start over. While attempting to force Zuko and Iroh to show they are Firebenders, he gets arrested and brainwashed. Later when he is helping Avatar Aang, he risks he attempts to kill his captor who in turn deals Jet a fatal blow to the gut.
Jin \j-IN\: From Ba Sing Se, Jin has a crush on Zuko and is only seen in Tales of Ba Sing Se. See also Zuko.
Joo Dee\JOO-dee\: A rather strange guide, Joo Dee lives in Ba Sing Se and was the guide to the gaang when they visited there. Joo Dee can also be referring to a number of different females brainwashed by the Dai Li under Lake Laogai.
K
Kana \KAH-nuh\: Katara and Sokka's grandmother, mother of Hakoda. Originally, she is from the Northern Water Tribe, but to escape an arranged marriage, she secretly moved to the Southern Water Tribe where she still resides.
Katara \kuh-TAHR-uh\: The main heroine of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Friend to Avatar Aang, sister of Sokka. She is the last waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe. She finds Aang trapped in a block of ice and helps him to try and end the war. Eventually, she becomes Avatar Aang's Waterbending Sifu.
Koh \KOH\: Residing in the Spirit World, Koh is said to have been around since very near the beginning, and is known as The Face Stealer. He steals the face of anyone who shows emotion in his presence, and Aang goes to him to find out the location of the Moon and Ocean spirits. Koh is also said to have stolen the face of Ummi on her wedding day to Avatar Kuruk as punishment for Kuruks arrogance. See also Spirit World, Ummi and Avatar Kuruk.
Kuei (52nd Earth King) \KU-ay\: Kuei, known simply as the Earth King or 52nd Earth King, is the ruler of the Earth Kingdom and resides in Ba Sing Se when the gaang arrive there. Though he didnt know it, his trusted advisor and head of the Dai Li, Long Feng, was hiding the 100-year-long war from him as well as controlling the city more so than the King himself. At the beginning of Book 3, it is revealed that the Earth King has decided to travel the world in disguise with his pet bear, Bosco. See also Bosco, Ba Sing Se, Long Feng and Dai Li.
Kuruk \Kuh-rook\: The Waterbending Avatar before Avatar Kyoshi, Kuruk was arrogant and proud, and liked to challenge anyone to battles and boast about his abilities. He fell in love with Ummi, from the Southern Water Tribe, and they were to be married at the Spirit Oasis. Just as their wedding took place, Koh stole Ummi away as punishment for Kuruks arrogance. Kuruk has been trying to retrieve her in the Spirit World ever since.
Kyoshi \KEE-oh-SHEE\: The Earthbending Avatar before Avatar Roku, she created Kyoshi Island to save her homeland from Chin The Conqueror. The Kyoshi Warriors dress in Avatar Kyoshis style. Kyoshi reveals in Escape From The Spirit World that the 46th Earth King ordered her to stop the peasant revolt and she refused, making the Earth King order her arrest. After fighting away the guards, she agreed to train an elite team to be known as the Dai Li to enforce the cultural laws of Ba Sing Se. Kyoshi was the oldest of all Avatars as well as having the biggest feet.
Kyoshi Island \KEE-oh-SHEE-eye-land\: Once the peninsula, connected to the mainland of the Earth Kingdom, Kyoshi Island was originally the town and surrounding area where Avatar Kyoshi lived. When Chin the Conqueror tried to take over, Kyoshi separated her home from the mainland, creating Kyoshi Island.
Kyoshi Warriors \KEE-oh-SHEE-WAR-ee-ors\: An elite group of young female warriors that dress the same way Avatar Kyoshi (who hailed from Kyoshi Island, where the warriors are from) did as well as using the same metal fans as the Avatar, protect their island from threats.

La \LA\: Also known as the Ocean Spirit, La crossed over from the Spirit World with its counterpart Tui, and became a koi fish in the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole. See also Tui.
Lao Bei Fong \LAY-oh-BAY-FONG\: Lao Bei Fong is married to Poppy Bei Fong, and lives in Gaoling. He is Toph Bei Fongs father.
Lemur \LEE-murr\: An animal native to the Air Temples. Though the Air Nomads died off, lemurs still populate the area.
Li/Lo \Lee/Low\: Two elderly sisters who serve as supervisors, assistants and advice-givers to Azula and have a house on Ember Island.
Longshot \LONG-shot\: A member of the Freedom Fighters. Very skilled with a bow and arrow. For a long while, he was considered a mute until he spoke in Lake Laogai. Friend to Avatar Aang.

Mai \May\: Mai is first seen in Return to Omashu, shown as the bored daughter of the new Fire Nation governor of Omashu. In reality, she has blades hidden all over her person and is a very capable fighter. She has been in love with Zuko since they were children growing up together, and is close friends with Azula and Ty Lee. Mai usually shows very little emotion other than explaining her hatred for things, until The Beach where she explains her past as being told to be quiet and do the right thing for the sake of her fathers reputation. It is revealed in Her uncle is the warden of the Boiling Rock. See also Zuko.
Meng \MENG\: The assistant to Aunt Wu with springy hair and an infatuation with Aang. See also Aunt Wu and Aang.
Miyuki \me-YOO-kee\: Miyuki is a long-haired white cat, resembling a Persian cat from the real world. She is owned by the Herbalist. See also Herbalist.
Momo \MOH-moh\: A lemur of the Southern Air Temple. Avatar Aang's pet. Named for the peach he snatched from Sokka in their first civilized meeting.

Northern Air Temple \ NORTH-urrn AYER TEMM-pull\: The Northernmost Air Temple, the Northern Air Temple was home to male Air Benders.
Northern Water Tribe \NORTH-urrn WAR-ter Tribe\: Referring to the large ice city inhabited by people of the Water Tribe, located at the North Pole. The city is ruled by Chief Arnook, and is also home to his daughter, Princess Yue.

Ozai \OH-zy\: Firelord of the Fire Nation. Firelord Sozin's grandson, father of Prince Zuko and Princess Azula. Husband to Princess Ursa, brother of Iroh.

Pathik \PAHT-eek\: The guru who found solace in the Eastern Air Temple. He aided Avatar Aang in mastering the Avatar State.
Piandao \Pee-AN-dow\: Hailing from the Fire Nation, Piandao is an excellent swordsman who teaches Sokka more about sword-fighting and general battle skills.
Poppy Bei Fong \POP-ee-BAY-FONG\: Wife of Lao Bei Fong, Poppy lives in Gaoling and is Toph Bei Fongs mother.

Ran \r-AAn\: One of the Firebending Masters, Ran is a dragon seen in The Firebending Masters along with its counterpart Shao, both showing Aang and Zuko the secret to pure firebending. See also Shao.
Roku \roh-KOO\: The firebending Avatar before Aang, Roku grew up and was best friends with Fire Lord Sozin. Roku reveals to Aang that, through Rokus descendants marriages (Ursa, his granddaughter, marrying Ozai), Roku is Zuko and Azulas great grandfather. Roku blames himself for giving Aang the responsibility of restoring balance to a very unbalanced world (the Fire Nation on the brink of total domination), due to being unable to stop Sozin from taking over more land and beginning the war. Shao \sh-AH-oh\: One of the Firebending Masters, Ran is a dragon seen in The Firebending Masters along with its counterpart Ran, both showing Aang and Zuko the secret to pure firebending. See also Ran.
Sky Bison \SKY BY-sunn\: Native of the Air Temples, the source that the original Airbenders learned how to bend the element of air. Sky Bison have the ability to fly and bend the air around themselves. As a tribute to the Sky Bison, Master Airbenders tattoo arrows on their heads to match the fur pattern of the sky bison. There is only one known Sky Bison alive today. He is the pet of Avatar Aang and his name is Appa.
Smellerbee \SMELL-urr-bee\: A Freedom Fighter, the only known girl in the Freedom Fighter gang. She spends most of her time with her friend Longshot. After Avatar Aang visited them, she accompanied Jet and Longshot to Ba Sing Se.
Sokka \SAH-kuh\: Friend of Avatar Aang and older brother of Katara, Sokka hailed from the Southern Water Tribe. In essence, he was the Tribes' chief when his father, Chief Hakoda set out with the other men to help in the war. Two years after this, Katara and Sokka found Avatar Aang in an iceberg and have since been traveling the world with him.
Southern Air Temple \SUTH-urrn AYER TEMM-pull\: The Southernmost Air Temple, the Southern Air Temple was home to male Air Benders.
Southern Water Tribe \SUTH-urrn-WAR-ter-tribe\: The group of waterbenders (an non-benders from the same families) that live in a small village in the South Pole. Best known Southern Water Tribe members: Katara, Sokka, Hakoda, Gran Gran and Hama.
Sozin (Fire Lord) \soh-ZIN\: Growing up with Avatar Roku, Sozin is the great-grandfather of Zuko and Azula and harnessed the power of Sozins Comet (named after the feat) and using it to gain control over most of the world. He is responsible for the 100-year-long war still raging as well as the annihilation of the Air Nomads (other than Aang). He also let his life-long friend Roku die at the hands of the volcano on the island on which Roku lived, saying that with him out of the way he could complete his plan of taking over the world. Sozin also started the tradition of slaying dragons and gaining the title of Dragon for doing so. See also Roku, Sozins Comet and Aang.
Suki \SOO-kee\: A strong and skilled Kyoshi Warrior from the Earth Kingdom island of Kyoshi, Suki originally doesnt like Sokka very much due to his sexism and questioning of the ability that could be possessed by girls. He later apologises and she teaches him their ways of fighting, and they both end up falling for one another. They have kissed on a few occasions (The Serpents Pass, The Boiling Rock) and are officially a couple.
Sun Warriors \SUN-WAR-ee-ORS\: The Sun Warriors are an ancient race of Firebenders who are thought to be extinct, but are stumbled across by Aang and Zuko in The Firebending Masters when they first believed to be only walking through ruins. The Sun Warriors live near two mountains where the Firebending Masters (two dragons) live. They keep the Eternal Flame alive and practise pure firebending.
T
Teo \TAY-oh\: A refugee, the son of a mechanist who found home in the Northern Air Temple after their village was destroyed by a flood. In the very same flood, Teo, according to his father, lost his mother and the ability to walk. Since then, the mechanist has created a number of things for Teo, such as a crude yet clever wheelchair and a glider among other things. Teo aided Avatar Aang in the invasion on the Day of Black Sun by controlling one of his father's clever Caterpillar Tanks. He was also one of the few to escape the Fire Nation after their surrender.
Toph \TOFF\: Daughter of Lao and Poppy Beifong, two very rich people. However, due to Toph's blindness, her father and mother, though they love her, expect very little of her and are overprotective. This drove Toph away and she became the Blind Bandit, the champion of Earth Rumble Six for two years in a row. Toph, an amazing Earth Bender, who learned from Badgermoles, ran away from home to join Avatar Aang's gang and to help him learn Earth Bending.
Top-Knot \top-not\: The style of hair popular for males from the Fire Nation, a simple bun-like shape of hair on top of the head.
Toucan-Puffins \Too-can-puff-ins\: A hybrid, with the beak of a toucan and the body of a puffin. First seen in The Headband, and Sokka declares them enemy birds due to the gaang being in Fire Nation territory.
Tui \tw-EE\: Also known as the Moon Spirit, Tui is a spirit who crossed over, along with its counterpart La, from the Spirit World to the mortal world and became a koi fish living in the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole. Tui cured a sick baby, Yue, thereby giving her some of its life as well. Tui is killed by Zhao, before Yue takes Tuis place as the Moon Spirit. Turtleducks \turr-tull-duh-cks\: A hybrid with the body of a turtle and the head and neck of a duck. They are first seen in Zuko Alone when Zuko reflects on himself and his mother feeding some turtleducks.
Ty Lee\Tie-LEE\: Friends since childhood, Ty Lee travels with Azula and Mai, helping to track down Aang as well as Zuko and Iroh. Ty Lee is very dangerous in battle due to her great knowledge of the human body. She is able to identify its weak points and, with a series of quick jabs, incapacitate anyone (as well as being able to block their chi and disable their bending). Ty Lee cares a lot about her friends, and has a slight crush on Sokka.

Ursa \URR-suh\: Wife of Firelord Ozai and mother to Crown Prince Zuko and Princess Azula. Very little is known about her because she disappeared when Zuko was roughly eight years old. Later, Zuko learns she was banished for crimes against the Fire Nation when she was really doing all she could to save her beloved son from death.
Ummi \UH-mee\: Ummi hailed from the Southern Water Tribe and was engaged to Avatar Kuruk before, on their wedding day, Koh captured her and took her into the spirit world (stealing her face, what happened to her body is unknown) as punishment for the arrogance Kuruk had showed throughout his life. Unagi \YOO-nah-gee\: A giant seamonster living in the waters around Kyoshi Island. Aang narrowly escapes being (most probably) eaten by this creature, and ends up riding it and using its ability to shoot water from its mouth to stop the fires burning the town on Kyoshi Island.

Waterbender \WATT-ur-BENN-durr\: One who has the power to control or 'bend' the element of water. See also Waterbending. Notable waterbenders are Katara, Pakku, Hama.

Western Air Temple \ WEST-urrn AYER TEMM-pull\: The Westernmost Air Temple, the Western Air Temple was home to female Air Benders.
Wolfbat \wulf-bat\: A hybrid between a wolf and a bat, first seen in The Cave of Two Lovers. They appear to have bodies and faces of wolves (though considerably smaller) with bat wings.

Xin Fu \SH-in-FOO\: Manager of Earth Rumble 6 (assumingly as well as previous Earth Rumble tournaments) as well as owner of the ring it is held in, Xin Fu is an earthbender who is greedy and will do anything for money. He captures Aang and Toph in The Blind Bandit in order to retrieve the prize money he thought was unfairly won from him, and ends up going on a mission to retrieve Toph with Master Yu due to the payment offered by Tophs father, Lao Bei Fong, for doing so.
Y
Yangchen \yang-chen\: The airbending Avatar, before Avatar Kuruk. Little is known about this female Avatar, due to her only long appearance (apart from brief ones showing her airbending in The Avatar State) is in Escape From The Spirit World.
Yeh-Luh \YEH-loo\: A group of the Fire Nation military group the Rough Rhinos, Yeh-Luh is the explosives specialist and is responsible (along with the rest of the Rhinos) for the destruction of Jets village.
Yi Ming \YEE-MING\: Mentioned briefly, he was most probably a former Earth King in the distant past and is said to be best known for his public works as well as setting up the monorail system.
Ying \Yii-ng\: Ying is married to Than, and travels across the Serpents Pass with the gaang. She gives birth to baby Hope soon after they have crossed the pass. See also Than, Serpents Pass and Hope.
Yu (Master) \YOO\: Master Yu lives in Gaoling (the same town as the Bei Fong family) and runs Master Yus Earthbending Academy as well as serving as a private tutor for Toph Bei Fong. Actions (such as offering to bump Aang up to the next belt for paying for a year of lessons) suggest that he is more of a businessman than a true master. He is hired, along with Xin Fu, by Lao Bei Fong, for a large sum, to retrieve Toph.
Yue (Princess) \YOU-ay\: The Princess of the Northern Water Tribe, daughter of Chief Arnook, Yue was sick at birth and was healed by the Moon Spirit, Tui, thus giving Yue some of the Moon Spirits life. Engaged to Hahn, she falls in love with Sokka but has to sacrifice herself and become the new Moon Spirit, when Tui is killed, to restore balance. Yung \yuh-ng\: The former captain of King Buhmis army, Yung was the one standing beside Buhmi when he declared that he was going to do nothing about the oncoming Fire Nation invaders. Yung then led the rebellion group, willing to die rather than give up Omashu.

Zhao \SJOW\: Upon first meeting Zhao, he was a Commander, but after a few episodes, he was promoted to Admiral. He set a great number of forces against the Northern Water Tribe and lay siege upon them for several days, in which time he found the Spirit Oasis and the Moon and Ocean's mortal forms (that of koi fish). He killed the Moon Spirit, destroying the moon and the power to waterbend. However, after Avatar Aang joined forces with the Ocean Spirit and Princess Yue returned her borrowed life and became the new Moon Spirit, Zhao was killed by the Ocean Spirit.
Zuko \ZOO-koh\: Crown Prince of the Fire Nation, Zuko's tale began after roughly two and a half years of his lifelong banishment. Throughout the story, Zuko becomes more and more confused. Eventually, he ends up in Ba Sing Se where his loyalty is tested and he joins forces with his sister, Princess Azula. After joining the Fire Nation once again, he finds he is not happy and tells his father he is planning to join the Avatar. The rest of his story has yet to be told.
